Howdy Peeps,
The world is on fire. "I can't breathe", "say their names", take a knee and 8:46. For fans of Colin Kaepernick, divine justice, finally. If you want to know more about all these anti-racism protests, check out this source, the Black Lives Matter website. Also these are two good articles on having respectful conversations about race from Forbes and Smithsonian magazine. Trevor Noah has some great commentary on his Instagram, you can link to a few of them from this this article. If you haven't kept track of all the inciting incidents besides George Floyd, you can read about Amy Cooper and the significance of her actions as an example of white privilege and systemic racism in these two articles from the New York Times and Forbes.
I was reminded recently that I say a lot that reading is one of the key avenues to developing compassion and helping us to keep in touch with our humanity. I always ask you "what is the author saying about the human condition" or what it means to be human? I believe it strongly. Putting yourself in others' shoes is one of the most powerful tools we have to create empathy, create understanding, and ultimately create change. And writers in all genres have the power of the pen to help us to understand our times, our reactions to them, and motivate us to be better.
So this week I'm sharing a few videos for you on the blog. Mostly about reading and writing. If you're looking for something to do to pass the time... From book recommendations, to writing advice, to motivational TED talks, these videos will of course lead you to other videos. Have fun going down the rabbit hole. If you want to read books online for free, remember you joined the Biblioteque Nationale with BanQ and have an email with your log-in and password. You can also use the Sora app for free on your phone or tablet or computer you just need your CVR library card; search for New Frontiers School Board as your school and sign in with the ID number on your card. If you want some prompts for writing check out these sites: Writer's Digest and/or Poets & Writers. Or just open up a blank page and let er rip about what you're thinking about all that's going on.
Happy reading (and maybe writing)!

Looking for something to read? Here's a nicely curated look at some literary classics by the folks at Ted Ed. I've posted the video to one of my favourite books below, but here is the YouTube playlist of the rest. Some non-fiction, or more current books? They've got a list for that too!
Want some great advice on writing? Go to the source: the pros. Here's Elizabeth Gilbert author of Eat, Pray, Love, on writing a follow-up to a global smash. Also, check out this YouTube playlist for some more advice by professional writers on issues for writers like how to develop an idea, what revision means, and so on.
Looking for some great ideas on being more productive or feeling more in control of your life and well-being? Check out these playlists of Ted Talks, and start with the effect social media has on us below. Finding our purpose, feeling like what we do matters, and being motivated to keep going are central goals of life.
