The Quarantine Diaries: Listen to Something II

In talking about my first post with Hardy and Beaudin, we started reminiscing and talking music that shaped us growing up. So then a) I felt like crap about my first playlist, not because it's not good, but because there's SO much music out there, and so many memories and experiences connected to it (especially growing up), that I shouldn't just limit my musical life to recent times. So b) I felt I should delve into my youth a bit and share a few keystones, AKA make another playlist! Maybe you know these bands and albums, maybe not so much. As a child of the 80s, there's a lot of music that brings back memories. I'm more of a radio listener than a collector. So if I chose to buy an album, it meant a lot to me. Thus, I narrowed down my list by putting here only albums I actually owned. Many on vinyl. They're gone now, replaced by cassette or CD in some cases. But I hope you enjoy, and maybe even get inspired to go down your own musical memory lane and see what pops up, what rock you can un-turn, what country you can explore... Puns intended. Ha. Again excuse some of the sound quality, but it gives you an idea.

1980. My very first concert. Grade 7, baby. To this day "You Shook Me All Night Long" is my number one request, and I gots to dance and scream my lungs out. Once brought my vinyl copy of Highway to Hell to a dance for the DJ to play, and never got it back. AARGH!!!
Picture
1980. "Take it on the Run" and "Keep on Loving You" - God help you if you're in the car with me when these come on. It's belt-a-palooza! Along with Air Supply I think these were the cheesy pop acts of the day. I've never been that cool. I own it. Love these guys!
Picture
1981."Urgent", "Waiting for a Girl Like You" and many others. A classic album. Several songs made it on a mixed tape that I used to play on loop on long road trips. Somehow you always go back to the feel good tunes of your youth.

Picture
1981. "Start Me Up". Indeed. Well the Stones, what more is there to say. I'm sure you don't need the visual of a teen me trying to move like Jagger. "Waiting on a Friend" is so lovely.

Picture
1983. Yup. Bought the t-shirt. Absolutely was mad for these guys. Also had the next album. And also The Thomson Twins... random. But everyone knows "Mad World" by now from the remakes ... Try the rest.
Picture
1984. The king of Canadian rock. "Summer of 69" will always be my go-to Karaoke song. "Run to You", so many classics on this seminal album. Made Canada cool baby.

Picture
1984. Amazing power, grace, and stamina. Saw her in concert later on, you wouldn't believe. So many hits, but this was really a breakthrough. And my song "Proud Mary" (obvi).

Picture
1986. I blame my brother for this. And still remember how sad we were when he died. And getting turned on to his blues guitar proteges Canadians Jeff Healey and Colin James.
Picture
1987. Pretty sure I bought this for "Higher Love" and "While you See a Chance", and "Valerie". I like the poppy-soul of his voice. It's very 80s stylized pop, in a quality way.

Picture
1987. U2. The Joshua Tree. Probably the seminal album of the 80s. And for me "Where the Streets Have no Name" and "Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking for" are anthems that are as relevant to my life today as they were then.

Picture
1989. "The Last Worthless Evening" and "The Heart of the Matter".  Not on this album but two of the best songs ever. "The Boys of Summer" and "Leather and Lace" duet with Stevie Nicks, and while I'm at it here's "Landslide". Nothing against the Dixie Chicks, but the OG is best.
Picture
1991. Like I said. I've never been cool. But If Eddie Vedder wasn't the hottest thing going (and still is), then I don't know from crushes on musicians. What a voice. The power on this album and the new sort of stream-of-consciousness lyrical style is cool and additive.

Picture
1992. Smooth. Canadian Legend. A little softer side. I must have been mellowing out from the early 80s. Eminently listenable. His voice just transports you. Love "Unknown Legend" and "Harvest Moon".
Picture
1993. Couldn't get whole album, so this is a greatest hits link. Jann Arden. I went through a phase of female singer-songwriter. Also Canadian. Great vocals. Check our Holly Cole Trio too, a bit more jazzy.
Picture
1993. So sad that she's dead. You probably know "Zombie" from remakes. This is the first album - I'm sure I bought it because "Linger" was on a show like Dawson's Creek or something I loved at the time.
