Syllabus / Course Outline for Term 1, and project break-down. ​

3. Original Flash Fiction Story & Reflection (4-5 periods over 10 days, finetuning an existing story draft & reflecting on creative process)​
Checkpoints: 
  • Oct. 30  Choosing which story to do and typing it up if that is not already done - working on extending and honing the draft and craft
  • Nov. 4  typing, revising, MLA formatting, finalizing and printing your original flash fiction
  • Nov. 5/6 Peer review (2 peers on the physical copy). In this class, after review, you will self-review and make notes based on the feedback on how to revise; this will include highlighting and labelling of all your literary techniques used on your rough copy
  • Nov. 10 finalizing the good copy, if not done on the weekend (recommended) and starting on the reflection which can be by audio or written / typed. There is a bonus 5% for students who finish their full project, including reflection, and submit it by the end of class today.
  • Nov. 11/12 depending on the group and Nov 13 the last day of the term. These will be work periods to catch up on the current project, submit missing work such as notesheets or writing exercises, and/or work on a resubmission of the response. Any students totally up to date may read their books or work on material for other subjects.
  • DUE Nov. 13 including the recorded reflection uploaded to Teams by the end of class, or handwritten or typed.​​
​5% will be deducted for each checkpoint missed (max. total 10%) -CHKPTS: revised writing exercise full draft, peer review (2 peers), on that peer-reviewed draft, highlight and label all techniques used.
There are no late penalties as it is end of term. The project closes / will not be accepted after class on Nov. 13
​Re-submissions will be allowed for the written story only.
1. Flash Fiction Process Work, due dates are projections and subject to change as we move through the unit.
  • DUE Sept. 19 - Twitterature mini-writing assignment, by hand or typed with no special formatting.​​
  • DUE Sept. 29 - Note-sheet & writing exercise to "Currents"
  • Oct. 2 - ​​Speed Dating class on 2 of the 4 flash fiction stories you found on your own online. So you need to have found at least 2 and done notes to TWO on the long sheet
  • ​DUE Oct. 3 - Note-sheet  & writing exercise to "Likable", and work period to catch up on this, ind. reading, and resubmissions
  • DUE Oct. 9/10 - Note-sheet & writing exercise to "The Coat" ​
  • DUE Oct. 15/16 - Note-sheet and writing exercise to "Taylor Swift"​
​2. Response to a Flash Fiction Story (4-5 periods over 10 days from an existing outline)
Checkpoints: 
  • Oct. 20 end of class: typed, MLA formatted, shared with me with editing privileges, and labelled properly your thematic/thesis statement and path statement.
  • Oct. 22 end of class, you should have a completed introduction and one body paragraph on which to give you feedback
  • Oct. 27 a full draft of your response, printed by you before class, due for peer review in class
  • DUE: Oct. 30 top of the class
​5% will be deducted for each checkpoint missed (max. total 15%) CHKPTS: thematic & path statements to Ms. Sauve, intro & one body fedback in Word online, & peer review full draft (2 peers)
LATE penalties: after Oct. 30 3:35pm -5%, unless an IEP specifies extra time, then no penalty. After Nov. 6 3:35 pm -10%. The project closes Nov. 13th 3:35pm.
Re-submissions will be allowed.
Week 1
  • Student survey DUE in first class (can take overnight if needed).
  • Choose any book in any genre for independent reading and ensure you bring it to class.
  • Watch the Ted Talk by Andrew Stanton The Clues to a Great Story and note his main commandments; we will be using this information to guide our journey into flash fiction for Term 1.​
