- Poem "This is a Photograph of Me" by Margaret Atwood, published in The Circle Game 1998. Annotate the poem based on your own thoughts and class discussion; consolidate your interpretation on the back in a paragraph explaining the following: what is the meaning? How did the author craft that meaning - discuss two techniques or use two quotes and explain them. How can you relate to the poem? Explain one personal or cultural example AND one textual example (a song, movie, tv show...) Finally, exaplin how this poem is relevant to youth today.
- Freewrite inspired by that poem - brainstorm a place where a photo could be taken; imagine yourself or a character you create to be in a photo at that place. Follow the structure of Atwood's poem juxtaposing the overall and general description of a place up front, with the private feelings of the person in the photo below. You don't have to use an aside ( ). You can write in verse or prose.
- Choose a novel or memoir or graphic novel (it must be narrative, long-form) for independent reading and ensure you bring it to class.
- Freewrite #2 to "7 Years" by Lukas Graham. Read the lyrics and the song. Write 3 verses of 7 lines each (total 21 lines) - each verse is to correspond to a time in your life (or your character's life). 1 verse from your childhood, 1 verse for now, and 1 verse for 20 years or more from now. Follow his structure for the 7 lines of the verse about a particular age.
